{Review} Zonderkidz - The Beginner's Bible

Do you have younger children in your immediate or extended family for whom you'd love to purchase a Bible, but wonder how in the world they are going to understand the contents? Our daughter is in high school and owns an array of Bibles in various translations, but when it comes to my younger nephews selecting a Bible for them is not as easy as for my teenage daughter.

Review: The Beginner's Bible from Zonderkidz

My youngest nephew is fascinated with Bible stories and everything related to church. I wanted a special Bible gift for him that was going to be at his Kindergarten level of reading and comprehension. Yet I also needed to know it was from a company I could trust to simplify the Bible text without changing the heart of each story. That's where Zonderkidz and their updated version of The Beginner's Bible comes in.

The Beginner's Bible is a hardcover book that's just the right height for little hands to hold, although it might be a little heavy for them to tote around. It definitely would be perfect for a child to hold while sitting to read with a parent or alone.  It's 511 full-color pages of Bible stories from both the Old and New Testaments.

The font used for the Bible stories is large and plain, making it easy for younger children to read on their own. Beginning readers could even use this book to practice their new reading skills. Every single page includes a full color picture related to the story along with text.  The titles of each story are large and kept simple to make it easy for children to remember.

Every story also includes beneath the title the Bible verses from where the story is taken. This, to me, is a fantastic jumping off point for older kids who may be listening along or for kids who are starting to outgrown The Beginner's Bible. They can reference the complete story in the Bible to fill in more details. It is also a lovely tool for parents with have inquisitive children who want to know more of the details around a story - immediately. Right then. No waiting to find the story in your Bible.

The Beginner's Bible includes a table of contents that lists out each Bible story covered by the book and the pages where it can be found. This makes it simple to quickly find a beloved or seasonally appropriate story (The Bright Star and Three Visitors - page 282).

Throughout the book words that may be new to the reader are italicized, which indicates they are also listed in the dictionary at the back of The Beginner's Bible. The dictionary words are listed alphabetically, as you'd expect, with easy to understand definitions for words like anoint, leprosy, tabernacle, or quail. This book truly supports the early reader in all facets.

If you're considering The Beginner's Bible for a child in your life, now is the perfect time time of year to start a new daily routine of reading Bible stories. We still have fond memories of our evening Bible stories with Amber and wish she had been given a book like this one where she could practice her budding reading skills.

Although we were offered the The Beginner's Bible as a review, it was the absolute perfect Christmas gift for my five-year-old nephew. I would have happily purchased this book for him or any other child as a read-aloud or early reader Bible.
